What If Awakening Isn't About Ascending?
For years I thought awakening was about becoming more spiritual. Being more present. Healing more. Learning more. Expanding my consciousness. Reaching higher states. Like many people on a spiritual path, I unconsciously imagined enlightenment as an upward journey.
Then I came across Dr. Sue Morter's work on the 12-chakra system, and one idea stopped me in my tracks. She suggests that awakening isn't actually an ascent. It's a descent. Not descending into darkness, but descending into the body.
Rather than climbing from the Root Chakra toward the Crown in an effort to reach Spirit, she describes consciousness as already whole. Already connected to Source. The journey isn't about becoming spiritual. It's about allowing that consciousness to fully inhabit our human experience. That simple shift changed something for me. It also helped me understand my own life.
For most of my life, my awareness developed long before my embodiment did. I loved psychology, symbolism, dreams, spirituality, astrology, Human Design, Gene Keys, consciousness, and understanding how life works. I could see patterns everywhere. My mind and intuition became places where I felt safe. But my body was almost an afterthought. Not because it wasn't important, but because somewhere along the way I learned it wasn't safe to fully live there. Looking back, there were many reasons.
I was adopted as an infant. I experienced early attachment wounds before I had language. I entered puberty earlier than many of my peers and quickly became aware of how other people viewed my body. Like many people, I learned to observe instead of feel. To understand instead of inhabit. To analyze instead of experience. None of those responses were wrong. They were intelligent adaptations.
As I continued studying psychology and spirituality, I became even more skilled at understanding consciousness. Ironically, I became very good at exploring awareness while remaining only partially connected to my body. Reading Morter's work made me wonder if this isn't uncommon.
Maybe many of us awaken first in consciousness because that's where we feel safest. Maybe we spend years opening our minds before we learn to open our bodies. And maybe the final stage of awakening isn't another mystical experience. Maybe it's finally feeling at home inside ourselves. Lately I've noticed how often my own work has been moving in this direction without me fully realizing it.
I fully believe we aren't becoming someone new." "We're shedding everything we're not." "Your body is the altar." "Come home to yourself."
At first those ideas felt separate. Now they feel like different expressions of the same truth.
What if awakening isn't about escaping the human experience?
What if it's about inhabiting it so completely that there is no separation between who you truly are and how you live?
Maybe the Root Chakra isn't the place we begin. Maybe it's where consciousness finally arrives. Where Spirit becomes lived experience. Where heaven isn't somewhere else. It's here. In a breath. In a heartbeat. In your feet touching the Earth. In the ordinary miracle of being fully alive.
For years, I thought the spiritual path was about becoming more conscious. Meditating more. Healing more. Learning more. Expanding my awareness. Like many people, I unconsciously imagined enlightenment as an upward journey, moving from the Root Chakra toward the Crown, rising above the physical world in search of something higher.
Then I came across Dr. Sue Morter's work in The Anatomy of Awakening, and one idea completely reframed how I see the journey. She describes awakening not as climbing toward Spirit, but as allowing Spirit to fully inhabit the body. In her 12-chakra model, consciousness begins in the highest frequencies of Source and gradually descends, integrating into every level of our being until it is fully anchored in the Root.
I think of the Divine Continuum as the living field of consciousness itself. Whether you call it Source, God, the Universe, or the unified field, it is the intelligence from which everything arises. Rather than existing somewhere outside of us, it surrounds us, flows through our energetic field, and gradually descends into the body, grounding through the Root, Earth Star, and Earth Core. Awakening, then, is not about reaching something beyond ourselves. It is about becoming a clear vessel through which that consciousness can be fully embodied.
In this model, the Root is not where the journey begins. It is where consciousness becomes fully embodied and lived.
That idea landed deeply for me because it helped me make sense of something in my own life.
For most of my life, my awareness developed long before my relationship with my body did. I was drawn to psychology, symbolism, dreams, spirituality, astrology, Human Design, Gene Keys, and understanding consciousness itself. I could see patterns everywhere. My intuition became one of my greatest strengths. My mind and inner world became places where I felt at home. But my body was different.
Looking back, there were many reasons for that. I was adopted as an infant. I experienced early attachment wounds before I had words for them. I entered puberty early and became aware of how other people viewed my body. Like so many of us, I learned that it was often safer to observe than to feel, to understand than to experience, to analyze than to fully inhabit myself.
None of those responses were wrong. They were intelligent adaptations that helped me navigate the world.
As I continued studying psychology and spirituality, I became even more skilled at exploring consciousness. Yet I now wonder if I was also, in some ways, continuing to live in the upper centers. I could understand awakening, teach awakening, and even experience profound states of awareness, while still learning what it meant to truly live inside my own body.
Reading Morter's work made me wonder if this is more common than we realize. Maybe many of us awaken first through consciousness because that's where we feel safest. Maybe we spend years opening our minds before we learn to open our bodies. Maybe our greatest spiritual lesson isn't reaching another state of awareness, but allowing that awareness to descend into our breath, our nervous system, our relationships, our choices, and our everyday lives.
That possibility also changes how I think about healing. What if we aren't becoming someone new? What if we're simply shedding everything we've been conditioned to believe we are not, so the essence that has always existed can finally be lived? Awakening wouldn't be about accumulating more knowledge, more practices, or more spiritual experiences. It would be about removing everything that keeps us from fully inhabiting ourselves.
When I look back over the last several months, I realize this has quietly become the heart of my own work. I've found myself saying that your body is the altar. That awakening is embodiment. That we aren't here to become someone else. That coming home to yourself is the path. At the time, they felt like separate insights. Now they feel like pieces of the same understanding.
I don't know that there is one correct map for awakening. Every spiritual tradition offers a different language for describing the journey. But this perspective gave me a framework that resonated deeply with my own lived experience.
Maybe the Root Chakra isn't simply where we begin.
Maybe it's where the journey is fulfilled.
Maybe awakening isn't about leaving the human experience behind.
Maybe it's about finally being here. Fully present. Fully embodied.

This November, I'll be hosting a group immersion in Costa Rica. Jungle, ocean, movement, beauty, deep conversations, nourishing food, a nervous system exhale, and space to simply be human again.
You can choose one, both, or neither. Your body already knows what is calling you deeper.
I look forward to connecting. —XO Amy
