Exploring Consciousness Through Color, Nature & the Gene Keys
I had a Lemme lollie and began exploring experiencing consciousness more specifically Gene Keys through color, texture, sound, and the natural world…
I've been thinking a lot about color lately. Not just a little, A LOT. And not just the colors we see, but how we experience them. How certain colors evoke memories, emotions, sensations, and even a feeling of connection to something beyond what we can explain.
As a graphic designer and art therapist, I've spent years exploring the relationship between creativity, psychology, and the human experience. Color has always been part of that exploration. Especially for me in Oregon.
But recently, something new has been emerging as I contemplate the Gene Keys, the I Ching, and the changing seasons here in Oregon. What if we could bring these worlds together? What if the Gene Keys could be explored not only through contemplation and language, but through color, texture, sound, movement, and our relationship with nature?
Color Is More Than Something We See
Color influences how we experience the world around us. Think about the warmth of golden sunlight coming through a window, the deep green of a forest, the softness of a lavender sky, or the intensity of a brilliant red flower. Colors can evoke emotions, memories, and associations before we've even had time to think about them.
Color psychology explores the relationship between color and our emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses. Our experiences are influenced by many things, including personal memories, cultural associations, environmental conditions, and individual preferences. A color that feels peaceful to one person may evoke an entirely different experience for someone else.
And that's what fascinates me. Rather than assigning one fixed meaning to a color, what happens when we become curious about our own experience of it? What memories arise? What sensations do we notice? What does a particular color invite us to explore?
Synesthesia: When the Senses Begin to Meet
Another concept I've been exploring is synesthesia. Synesthesia is a sensory phenomenon in which one type of stimulation automatically evokes an additional sensory experience. Some people experience letters or numbers as colors, while others associate sounds with particular colors, shapes, or textures.
I find this fascinating, especially when thinking about creativity and consciousness. Even without experiencing neurological synesthesia, we can explore sensory connections through imagination, metaphor, and artistic expression.
What color does intuition feel like? What texture would you give to harmony? If a particular emotion had a sound, what would it be? What happens when we allow ourselves to explore those questions without needing an immediate explanation?
This is where I begin to see an interesting connection to the Gene Keys.
The Gene Keys as Living Poetry
The Gene Keys, developed by Richard Rudd, offer a contemplative exploration of 64 archetypal patterns inspired by the I Ching. Each Gene Key moves through three frequencies of consciousness: Shadow, Gift, and Siddhi.
I've been exploring these themes for years, but increasingly I'm interested in what happens when we move beyond intellectually understanding them. How do we experience these qualities in our everyday lives? How do they show up in our relationships, creative expression, bodies, and environments? And what if we could give them a sensory language?
The I Ching offers an extraordinary starting point because its hexagrams are rich with natural imagery: wind, water, thunder, mountains, fire, earth, and sky. These are not just abstract concepts. They are experiences we can encounter in the world around us.
Gene Key 57: The Gentle Wind
Unease → Intuition → Clarity
Gene Key 57 corresponds to Hexagram 57 of the I Ching, traditionally associated with The Gentle, or Wind.
Imagine standing among the trees as a soft breeze moves through the leaves. You cannot see the wind itself, but you can witness its movement. You can hear it, feel it against your skin, and recognize its presence. There is something poetic about that in relationship to intuition.
What if intuition is less about searching for answers and more about becoming sensitive to what is already moving through our experience?
When I contemplate Gene Key 57 through color and texture, I imagine translucent sage green, silver, delicate grasses, flowing silk, and light moving through leaves. I hear whispering wind, subtle chimes, and the quiet rhythm of breath.
Someone else might experience it completely differently. And that's part of the beauty of this exploration. The intention isn't to decide what Gene Key 57 should look or feel like. It's to become curious about how its qualities emerge through our own senses and creative expression.
Gene Key 50: The Cauldron
Corruption → Equilibrium → Harmony
Gene Key 50 corresponds to Hexagram 50, The Cauldron. The imagery shifts dramatically. Where the Gentle Wind feels subtle and fluid, the Cauldron evokes a vessel, warmth, nourishment, transformation, and the alchemy of bringing different elements together.
Here in Oregon, we're moving through autumn. Apples are falling from the trees, leaves are changing color, mushrooms are emerging, and the earth is beginning another cycle of decomposition and renewal.
I've been making everything apple lately, living on a property with an orchard, and there's something wonderfully fitting about exploring the Cauldron during harvest season.
I imagine copper, amber, moss, rich burgundy, aged metal, and warm clay. I hear the crackling of fire and the sound of something simmering on the stove. I feel the textures of bark, fallen leaves, and the earth beneath my feet.
The contemplation becomes something we can experience through our environment. What are we transforming? What nourishes us? Where are we being invited to restore equilibrium in our lives? And what might harmony actually feel like?
Nature as a Living Palette
One of the most exciting parts of this exploration is bringing in the changing seasons. I've decided to focus on the seasonal rhythms and landscapes of the United States, beginning with what I'm experiencing here in the Pacific Northwest.
The Gene Keys follow an annual sequence as the Sun moves through the zodiac, offering different themes for contemplation throughout the year. Meanwhile, nature is moving through its own rhythms. Colors change. Textures change. The light shifts. Different plants, flowers, fruits, and animals become more visible.
What might happen if we explored the Gene Keys alongside what's happening in the natural world?
Imagine the colors of autumn harvest accompanying a contemplation of transformation, or the first delicate blossoms of spring inspiring an exploration of emergence and possibility. The same Gene Key might evoke entirely different artistic expressions depending on the season, landscape, or person contemplating it.
And that's where I see the potential for a living, evolving body of creative work.
From Awareness to Experience
For me, this is also an extension of art therapy and the importance of creative exploration. We can spend years studying ourselves through psychology, astrology, Human Design, the Gene Keys, and other systems of self-discovery. But understanding something intellectually is only one part of the experience.
What happens when we engage our senses? When we paint, photograph, move, listen, create, or simply spend time observing nature?
Creative expression can give us another way to explore experiences that aren't always easy to put into words. We may notice connections, emotions, and perspectives that weren't available through analysis alone. And perhaps most importantly, we begin developing a more personal relationship with what we're learning.
Rather than being told what something means, we discover what it means to us.
Where Color Heals Meets Everyday Illumination
I'm beginning to envision Color Heals as a visual and sensory companion to Everyday Illumination. An exploration of the 64 Gene Keys through color, texture, natural imagery, seasonal rhythms, sound, and creative contemplation.
Some of this may become artwork and photography. Some may become podcast conversations, sensory journeys, or creative invitations. And eventually, I can imagine bringing these experiences into immersive gatherings and retreats, where we explore consciousness through art, nature, sound, movement, and connection.
I don't know exactly what this will become yet. And I'm enjoying that. Because sometimes creativity asks us to follow our curiosity before we know where it's leading.
Perhaps that's part of intuitive living, too. Allowing ourselves to explore, experiment, and discover what emerges when we stop needing to have everything figured out.
What if color became another language for understanding ourselves?
What if the natural world became part of our contemplation? And what if we could move beyond simply learning about transformation and begin experiencing it through the beauty of everyday life?
That's where I'm heading with Color Heals. And I'm excited to see what unfolds.
This is a new chapter of Everyday Illumination, where spirituality meets humanity, creativity, and the everyday experience of being alive.
Welcome to Everyday Illumination.
